The Kanawha Valley Regulators were organized in February 1999 as an affiliate of the Single Action Shooting Society, better known as SASS. Currently, the membership consists of about 50 individuals, and families, from across the Greater Kanawha Valley and Tri-State areas. The club holds regular monthly meetings on the first Monday of every month at 7:00 PM at the Nitro Public Library. Matches are held the third weekend of the months March through November (inclusive, nine total) at The Putnam Co. Gun Club range located in Eleanor, West Virginia. We alternate Saturday and Sunday, from month to month so that every one has a chance to attend at least a few. Check our shooting schedule for more details.

All matches are governed by SASS rules, and utilize traditional "Old West" style guns (i.e.- single-action revolvers, lever action rifles of pistol caliber, and shotguns- either double barreled, non-automatic ejector, with or without hammers; or exposed hammer pump or lever action shotguns made prior to 1899. Any modern replica equivalent of any of the above are acceptable.) See SASS rules for more specific details about basic matches, categories, and other types of side matches- available on their web site sassnet.com. The emphasis in Cowboy Action Shooting is on having fun. This is especially true at our club. We all enjoy the shooting, but many particularly enjoy the dressing in period costume or appearing "B-Western" style for each monthly shoot. The Cowboys and Cowgirls can really show their stuff! At our matches, targets are mostly big and close (there are varying levels so that there is something for everyone), and while we do declare a monthly category winner, the atmosphere is one of relaxation and enjoyment among friends, rather than a "win or lose" competition. Stages are usually designed to depict an historical event, movie scene, or fictional situation created by one of our Range Officers.

Beginning shooters are welcome as well as seasoned veterans of any shooting discipline. Experienced Cowboy Action Shooters are REQUIRED to be "in costume" and use their alias (rather than their real name) as per SASS regulations. Beginners are, however, allowed some latitude until they get themselves "organized". If possible (more times than not) many members may even allow you to use their weapons and ammo should you find yourself lacking in some fashion. Such is the camaraderie of our membership!

Spectators are welcome as well. We particularly like to involve whole families in whatever fashion they choose or are comfortable with (shooter, spotter, waddy, or spectator.)
When all is said and done- we have fun! But above even that important objective- we are safe. That is the way everything is handled and conducted. We want to make sure that everyone who came to enjoy our friendly competition leaves just a little more enthusiastic about returning again. So we expect every individual attending to conduct their person accordingly. Think Safety- First, Last, Always.
